About Joe Kemple

Joe began his apprenticeship under his grandfather Allen "Smokey" Burd in Jefferson City, MO when he was just a boy. At age 18, he started full-time in the profession and has enjoyed 32 years as a piano tuner. He has a wide range of experience, including having been on staff at Truman State University, a tech for two different Steinway dealers, and as the tech for the largest music store in Norway. His passion for continuous education combined with his vast experience has earned him the recognition and title of Master Piano Technician, he is also a member of the Piano Technician's Guild.

Joe combines a lifetime of artisanal training with the latest technologies.  If you want a service that goes beyond the routine tuning, let Joe show you just how good your piano can sound.

Life outside of the piano world

Ham Radio

I hold an Extra Class Amateur Radio operators license, callsign is KZØN.  I was first licensed at age 11.

Drum and Bugle Corps

I am an avid fan of the marching arts!  I was a member of the 1988 World Champion Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps.

Civil Air Patrol

I reached the rank of Captain in the Civil Air Patrol and was both the communications  and personnel  specialist for the Des Moines squadron. I was part of many search and rescue missions.

Boy Scouts of America

I am the former Cubmaster of Pack 27 of LaPlata, MO.  Under my leadership, we went from 2 to 31 members in a 3 year period of time.  Although I did not make it to Eagle myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the 6 years that I spent with Troop 10 of Jefferson City, one of the oldest Boy Scouts Troops in existence. Philmont was one of the highlights of my formative years.

Musical groups

I have performed in a number of groups; as bassist for the heavy rock band Dresden Style, to keyboard and trumpet player for the experimental band Wych Elm, to playing trumpet in a classical music ensemble.
